The Mission

In alignment with the values of the Catholic Worker Movement and Dorothy Day's humanitarian vision: to provide hospitality for expecting mothers and mothers with children in need of housing. To live in solidarity and equality with the poor and distribute children, maternity and baby supplies to vulnerable women within Metro Detroit.

"The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another."

The House

9216 Mason Place is located in Detroit's Southwest, historically Latino, neighborhood. The house, built in 1928, was last owned in 2012 and was bought in September 2016 in the nation's largest tax foreclosure auction.

9216 Mason Place is a multi-family, 2 story brick home. It is quite spacious (approximately 2,000 square feet). Upon completion of total renovation the home will have 5 bedrooms and 2 baths along with a 2 car garage and full basement.

The house had been overtaken by squatters. This is a very common phenomenon in Detroit. After purchase of the property and many negotiation attempts (offering the squatters cash to cover moving and deposit/rent expenses) a three month eviction process ensued. After repossessing the property, the owner began another lengthy process of securing both a $24,000 grant and a $44,000 renovation mortgage working with real-estate agents, inspectors, general contractors, appraisers, Flagstar bank and Southwest Economic Solutions.

After six months of paperwork construction is finally scheduled to begin April 7th! Check for more updates in the blog.
